Rare Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Tray #377B by Johan Rohde, 1918

An exceptionally early and rare hand-hammered Georg Jensen sterling silver gallery or drinks tray, design #377B by Johan Rohde, introduced in 1918. This remarkable tray is masterfully crafted in an elegant oval form with a beautifully hand-hammered center framed by a high pierced gallery border of flowing Nordic scroll motifs. The refined gallery rises into two opposing open handles accented with delicate berry finials, filigree work, and geometric details, creating a sophisticated balance between organic Art Nouveau ornamentation and the emerging architectural lines of early Art Deco design.

The complexity of this tray’s construction would have required extraordinary silversmithing skill, particularly the fabrication of the raised openwork gallery and finely executed handles entirely by hand. Subtle hand-chased details throughout further enhance the sculptural quality and depth of the piece, while the softly reflective hammered surface captures and diffuses light beautifully, emphasizing the tray’s elegant proportions and remarkable craftsmanship.

Bearing Georg Jensen hallmarks used between 1915–1919, and with the design introduced in 1918, this example was produced during the earliest years of manufacture, making it among the first examples created. Pieces of this rarity and artistic refinement are seldom encountered, particularly with such strong provenance.
