Rare Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Hot Water Urn #32

An exceptionally rare and important Georg Jensen sterling silver hot water urn, design #32, designed by Georg Jensen circa 1913. Monumental in both scale and presence, this extraordinary example represents the very best of Jensen’s early silversmithing and is a true museum quality work of Danish silver.

The urn is beautifully hand raised in sterling silver, its substantial rounded body supported on a cylindrical pedestal base decorated with finely hand chased floral panels. The domed cover is crowned by an elaborate berry cluster finial, while sculptural ebony handles provide a striking contrast to the richly worked silver. The beautifully conceived tap continues the organic floral vocabulary characteristic of Georg Jensen’s earliest designs and turns to open for pouring.

Of particular importance, the urn bears a hand engraved Georg Jensen signature to the side, an exceptional and highly desirable feature that further distinguishes this example.

The urn was electrified for heating water, with the electrical connection discreetly incorporated into the rear of the pedestal. It retains its period cord and is presently in working condition. This integration of an electrical heating element into a major piece of handcrafted silver makes the urn particularly fascinating, combining traditional Danish silversmithing with the technological modernity of the early 20th century.

With its impressive proportions, extensive hand craftsmanship, sculptural ebony details and extraordinary presence, design #32 ranks among the most ambitious examples of Georg Jensen’s early hollowware. Far more than a functional hot water urn, it is an important example of Jensen’s early artistic vision and the exceptional standard of craftsmanship achieved by the Georg Jensen silversmithy.
