Hans Hansen Sterling Silver MCM Coffee Set 539/540

A vintage sterling silver mid-century modern coffee set designed by Karl Gustav Hansen for Hans Hansen, created in 1966. This beautifully handcrafted set includes the rare matching creamer and sugar bowl, along with the original sugar spoon designed to hang neatly on the side of the sugar bowl. The set was purchased directly from the Hans Hansen shop in Copenhagen in 1968, adding a wonderful element of provenance from the golden era of Danish modern design.

The coffee pot features a distinctly organic form, beginning with a rounded, full base that transitions into a cylindrical neck. The elegantly curved spout flows outward in a graceful arc, demonstrating the high level of skill required from the silversmith to create such a fluid shape.

The sugar bowl has a basket-like round form with a sculptural dome handle attached at opposing sides, giving it both balance and visual interest. The creamer has a charming organic design reminiscent of a small bird, with a long, slender neck rising from a rounded body. Completing the set is the sugar spoon, designed with an organic, tooth-like handle and a slightly gilded rectangular bowl.

This is a significant design set from the mid-century period, combining sculptural artistry with exceptional Danish craftsmanship. The price represents only a fraction of what it would cost to produce a comparable handcrafted sterling silver set today.
