Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Gallery Tray 332C
An exceptionally rare sterling silver tray from Georg Jensen, this piece showcases the distinctive design #332B by Johan Rohde, dating back to 1919. Often referred to as the “bridge tray,” this large oval tray is meticulously handcrafted. Noteworthy is the hand-applied raised edge, a technically challenging feat as the entire piece must be heated during welding to maintain its shape and tension.
The handles of the tray exhibit exquisite filigree details, a characteristic touch by Rohde evident in several pieces from this era. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these handles are thoughtfully designed to enhance the tray’s functionality. Along the border, intricate hand-chased etchings draw inspiration from the Viking era, adding a historical and artistic dimension to the piece.
Crafting such a tray required the expertise of only the most seasoned silversmiths, underscoring its significance. The design of this tray hints at the transition into the Art Deco period, making it a compelling testament to the evolving artistic styles of its time.
