Georg Jensen Set of Sterling Silver Bottle Coasters 289
An exceptionally rare set of four sterling silver wine coasters, design no. 289, introduced in 1919 by Georg Jensen.
Each coaster is executed in the celebrated “Grape” pattern and constructed with a removable sterling silver liner. The circular elevated bases are finely hand-chased and framed by openwork ornamentation depicting naturalistic clusters of grapes with intertwining stems and leaves — a hallmark of early Jensen design that reflects the firm’s deep engagement with Art Nouveau organicism.
The set comprises four coasters in total: two designed to hold a standard red wine bottle and two sized to accommodate a standard white wine bottle.
The rim displays refined, sculptural edge detailing closely associated with the work of Johan Rohde. While the model is formally attributed to Jensen, the character of the border suggests Rohde’s stylistic influence and underscores the collaborative artistic environment of the Copenhagen workshop during this formative period.
Each liner is hand-cut and hand-chased, demonstrating the high level of craftsmanship characteristic of early twentieth-century production. The presence of early hallmarks dating to the period of design further enhances the historical significance of the set. Complete sets of four from this early production period are seldom encountered.
