Georg Jensen Pair of Sterling Silver Five-Light Candelabra #481b by Johan Rohde
A rare and important pair of early Decorative Georg Jensen Five-Light Candelabra, Model #481b, designed in 1920 by Johan Rohde.
This exceptional and generously scaled pair embodies the refined elegance of early 20th-century Danish silver design. The gracefully curving arms extend outward in a fluid, organic movement, each richly adorned with intricate hand-chased detailing. The arms terminate in hand-chased sconces of beveled columnar form—an iconic Rohde motif that enhances the sculptural, organic character of the design.
At the center, an acorn finial emerges from finely chased leaf-form supports above a two-tiered lily-form base. The inner contours of the arms feature Rohde’s signature scroll motif, followed by sections embellished with scroll and shell-like elements. The central column, decorated with a restrained beaded band, reflects Rohde’s gradual transition toward the emerging Art Deco aesthetic.
Above, an elongated and sensual grouping of finely chased leaves rises along the column, once again supported by a scrolling element. The base—an extraordinary feat of silversmithing—is formed as a spun, rounded conical structure with tiered divisions and stepped beaded borders, adding depth and architectural balance to the composition.
Among Rohde’s most intricate and ambitious designs, Model #343 bears notable similarities to his celebrated Candelabra Model #224.
