Georg Jensen Henning Koppel Sterling Silver Centerpiece Bowl 980

An important early Mid-Century Georg Jensen sterling silver centerpiece bowl, design #980 by Henning Koppel from 1948.

This impressive large-scale bowl is a superb example of Koppel’s sculptural approach to silver. The broad, asymmetrical body sweeps outward in a continuous fluid form and rests upon a distinctive three-point sculptural base, closely related in its form to Koppel’s iconic #956 candelabra.

Designed in 1948, #980 was among the first of the monumental hollowware pieces Koppel created for Georg Jensen between 1948 and 1958. Significantly, it was also his first major silver design following his return from Sweden, where he had lived during World War II.

With virtually no applied decoration, the beauty of the piece comes entirely from its dramatic proportions, flowing lines and the extraordinary craftsmanship required to form such a substantial work in sterling silver. It is as much a piece of modern sculpture as it is a functional centerpiece.
