Hollowware
Georg Jensen Art Deco Sterling Silver & Bing & Grøndahl Porcelain Sugar Caster #4004
This exceptional piece reflects a significant chapter in Georg Jensen’s history. Created during the Second World War, when sterling silver was scarce due to wartime restrictions, Harald Nielsen incorporated Bing & Grøndahl porcelain into a select number of hollowware designs. The result is a remarkable combination of sterling silver and fine porcelain that stands as both a beautiful work of Art Deco design and a tangible reminder of how Danish craftsmanship adapted during a difficult period.
The gracefully bottle-shaped porcelain body is decorated with deep vertical fluting in rich Prussian blue, accented by subtle petrol blue and teal highlights that enhance the sculptural form. The base is finished in a darker cobalt blue glaze, creating a beautiful contrast and giving the piece remarkable depth and elegance.
The sterling silver sugar caster top is finely hand-pierced with a geometric Art Deco pattern and finished with Harald Nielsen’s signature Pyramid-inspired stepped ring, perfectly complementing the refined porcelain body. Both functional and decorative, this is a superb example of Danish Art Deco design and one of the most desirable porcelain and silver collaborations produced by Georg Jensen during the war years.
