Extremely Rare Vintage Georg Jensen Henning Koppel Large Fish Dish 1026
A very rare opportunity to purchase an original vintage Georg Jensen Georg Jensen Fish Platter #1026. Design by Henning Koppel from 1954 and which was acquired by The Danish Design Museum (formerly Kunstindustrimuseet). Georg Jensen designed his large dish in 1919, Johan Rohde his large fish platter with cover #335 in 1920 and Harald Nielsen’s large Pyramid fish platter and cover #600. Koppel followed his predecessors by designing this large domed fish platter.
This covered domed two-piece fish platter has no decoration as the form and shape are the decoration. The lack of ornamentation gives an organic effect and is an amazing source for reflection of light. The ends are turned up and resemble the mouth of a cod fish, very functional for lifting the cover off the dish. Henning Koppel rejected Functionalism for form, his focus was on creating truly beautiful objects and this is one of his most monumental and beautiful pieces. Sensual and curvaceous, wonderfully organic. When launching the design in 1954 a Danish newspaper reporter asked Koppel if one would put a fish inside for use, Koppel replied, “Only a cod would ask that kind of question”.
Measures 26 ¾” in length x 12½” across and 6 5/8” in height (68cm x 32cm, 17cm). Weighs 193oz (5.48kg).
