Exceptional A. Michelsen Danish Sterling Silver Fox Hunting Box
A remarkable and highly unusual handcrafted sterling silver box by the renowned royal silversmith A. Michelsen, one of Denmark’s most prestigious silver manufacturers and Royal Court Jeweller. Created in 1902, this substantial box is distinguished by an impressive sculptural hunting scene depicting a fox pursued by a hound. The fox, cast in high relief, races across the lid while the hound emerges from the rear edge of the box in pursuit, creating a dynamic three-dimensional composition rarely encountered in Danish silver.
The interior of the lid retains its original rich gilding, providing a beautiful contrast to the polished sterling silver exterior. According to provenance, the box originally belonged to a former director of a major Danish retail store, adding further historical interest.
Entirely handmade and of exceptional weight, this is a true one-of-a-kind piece that combines masterful silversmithing with sculptural artistry. Collectors of fine Danish silver, sporting art, or A. Michelsen masterpieces will appreciate both its rarity and outstanding craftsmanship.
