Antique Georg Jensen Silver Silver Cigar Lighter 188
An extremely rare large antique Georg Jensen sterling silver cigar lighter, design #188 by Georg Jensen, dating to 1920. This remarkable hand crafted smoking accessory is executed in a refined Art Nouveau style and demonstrates the exceptional silversmithing techniques of the early Georg Jensen workshops.
The lighter is raised on a round pedestal base with a beautifully hand chased stem of flowing organic decoration supporting a lantern form body. Mounted around the body are four applied floral motifs, each fitted with a removable silver lighting pin terminating in a large silver ball finial. These removable pins were used to transfer the flame for lighting cigars or cigarettes, an elegant and highly sophisticated feature rarely encountered today.
The removable upper section is richly decorated with hand chased floral ornamentation. Surmounting the lid is a large sculptural floral bud and berry finial, which cleverly functions as the flame extinguisher. The entire piece was fabricated completely by hand, reflecting the extraordinary craftsmanship and artistry associated with Georg Jensen’s earliest production years.
A rare and important collector’s piece, this cigar lighter combines sculptural beauty with functional design and remains in superb antique condition.
