1743 Antique Danish Rococo Silver Candlesticks
A rare and matching pair of Danish 830 sterling silver Rococo candlesticks, dating back to 1743. These exquisite pieces were crafted by Johan Jagenreuter, born around 1707, who received citizenship on June 3, 1733. He was authorized in gold and silversmithing in Copenhagen on October 30, 1761, and later became a captain in the civic militia before passing away in 1784. Both candlesticks are stamped with the date 1743, alongside the maker’s mark and the silver assay hallmark of Peter Nicolai V. Haven. Jagenreuter’s notable work includes a disk dated 1739 in Gjerslev Church, and he was granted a hat maker’s license in 1741 and 1743 by the Kunstindustrimuseet (Museum of Decorative Arts). His other works include the 1743 candlesticks and a tea machine from 1767.
These candlesticks are an excellent example of the Danish Rococo style, which flourished during the reign of King Frederick V (1746–1766). While influenced by the broader European Rococo movement, Danish Rococo also exhibited distinctive local features.
