Svend Weihrauch
1899 - 1962
Svend Weihrauch was educated as a silversmith and chaser at gold- and silversmith Hans Christian Matthiasen in Nykoebing Falster. Matthiasen's silversmithy was one of the leading workshops in flatware and jewellery in the Skoenvirke manner at the time. After finishing his apprenticeship he was employed by goldsmith Emil Oersnes in Aalborg and at Georg Jensen's silversmithy in Copenhagen.
In 1928 he moved to Aarhus and started working for Hingelberg silversmithy. He worked both as a designer of hollowware, flatware and jewellery as well as being the workshop manager. He was extremely productive and organised the Hingelberg workshop as a small-scale factory with modern machines and ways of producing the silver items. Despite this most items were often only made once.
Weihrauchs style was very masculine and functionalist. His early designs are very similar to Bauhaus designs in Germany at the same time. Later his designs were more refined with an almost organic feel.
During the 28 years he was employed at Hingelberg silversmithy he made more than 4500 sketches for hollowware, flatware and jewellery. Almost all of his many designs were produced.
